The strong rebound in stock prices since their March 23rd lows is a good example of how bailing out can cost you when the market reverses direction. This mistake compounds the damage from panic selling. The market may sometimes feel like it could go to zero, but market history shows that rebounds can return many portfolios to the black in just a few years.Ģ. If you don’t need cash right away and have a well-researched, diversified portfolio, realize that downturns ultimately are temporary. That may not sound like a huge difference, but if each investor contributed $5,000 a year, the buy-and -hold investor would have $2.6 million now the waffler would have $1.4 million. Consider that someone who stayed invested from 1980 until the end of February would have a 12% annual return, compared to someone who started at the same time, but sold after downturns and stayed out until two consecutive years of positive returns, who would have averaged a 10% return annually. If you wait years to get back in, you may never recover. Selling into a falling market insures that you lock in your losses. Ironically, this can be the single most damaging thing an investor can do. The urge to staunch the bleeding can be overwhelming – to salvage what you can and wait for the dust to settle. It can be gut-wrenching to see your investment portfolio or the 401(k) plan that you’ve been building for years take a sudden dive. These are some of the top mistakes investors typically make and my suggestions for what to do instead:ġ. If you need more wafers and canvas covers, check with your local NRD if you purchased your ET Gage through them. We recommend replacing the wafer and canvas cover every year to ensure accurate readings. When pulling sensors, mark any sensors that have been giving strange readings and may need to be replaced. Heated storage is not necessary as the sensors aren't damaged by freezing temperatures. Wash off sensors and store them so you'll remember where they are next spring. Try removing sensors shortly after a rain, adding water, digging down beside the sensor, or using a manufactured puller. Problems arise most often with the third- or fourth-foot sensors, especially on soil textures with high clay content. When pulling Watermark sensors be sure to take your time if they don't pull easily.

If you'd like to help, contact Extension Educator Gary Zoubek, 40 or most irrigation finished for the season and harvest fast approaching, this is a good time to pull Watermark sensors and ET Gages and store them for the winter. Nebraska growers participating in the Nebraska Ag Water Management Network (NAWMN) use Watermark sensors or ET Gages to provide timely data for irrigation decision-making. Removing Watermark sensors now can help ensure they aren't damaged by harvest and can be used again next year.
